BASF's New Isocyanate Processing Technology Helps Improve Air Quality In The Car

Shanghai, China — March 6, 2018 — Thanks to BASF's new processing technology, the environmental performance of isocyanate, one of the main raw materials for polyurethane foam, has been greatly improved, which in turn has improved the air quality inside the car. This new technology significantly reduces the emissions of volatile organic compounds, particularly acetaldehyde, acrolein and formaldehyde (VOC), providing a sustainable alternative to polyurethanes used in the manufacture of automotive interiors.

Andy Postlethwaite, senior vice president of the Specialty Materials business unit at BASF Asia Pacific, said: “Asian automakers are looking for solutions to improve the air quality inside the car. With BASF's new processing technology, the VOC of polyurethane foam can be significantly reduced. Emissions to help customers meet the increasingly stringent VOC emissions standards in the Asia Pacific region."

China Testing and Certification (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. tested the seat system with improved isocyanate. The results show that the emission of aldehyde volatiles (including formaldehyde) is reduced by 30-40 compared to the improved seat system. %, acetaldehyde and acrolein are reduced by 20-25%.

Isocyanates are mainly used in the production of automotive interior materials such as soft and self-skinning foam systems for seats, steering wheels and floor mats. BASF's expertise in polyurethane formulations has led to new processing technologies for the production of polyurethanes.
